Ms. Johanna Wynand, a General Assistant, started working at Tygerberg Hospital’s hostel when she was very young.

Tygerberg Children’s Hospital opened in March 2000. It provides specialized care to children. Approximately 16000 babies and children are admitted yearly. More than 100000 children receive outpatient care.

Clinical research is a key focus. Studies target diseases affecting children in South Africa. Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and cancer are all under investigation. The hospital also focuses on managing neonatal diseases.

The hospital has a coat of arms. It features a leopard supporting a Staff of Aesculapius. An antique lamp sits above. Sheila Fort designed these arms.
