Did Robert Liston ever imagine his summer retreat would become a Stockholm landmark? Listonhill stands before us, a vibrant yellow, two-story wooden house. It’s a testament to 18th-century elegance. Robert Liston, the British ambassador to Sweden from 1788 to 1793, commissioned this charming villa. It was designed by the renowned architect Fredrik Magnus Piper, the mastermind behind Hagaparken. Listonhill was completed in 1791. The design showcases a Palladian influence, a style popularized by the Italian architect Andrea Palladio. Interestingly, the house was originally intended to be built of stone. However, it ultimately took shape in timber, clad with wooden panels, painted in that cheerful yellow we see today. The gray gabled roof adds a touch of distinction.

Listonhill’s most striking feature is its central rotunda. This circular room extends the full height of the house, creating a unique architectural element. The outward-curving salon on the south facade offers a breathtaking panorama of Stockholm’s inlet. The smooth panels cladding the neoclassical facades were intended to mimic the appearance of a smoothly plastered wall. A later renovation added lock lists to the panels, subtly altering the original design. Remarkably, the interior of Listonhill remains largely unchanged, preserving its original decor and offering a glimpse into the past.

Liston’s diplomatic career took him from Stockholm to Constantinople and later to Washington, D.C.. He sold Listonhill to Elias von Langenberg, a wholesaler. The property then passed through several prominent hands, including wholesaler J.G. Wennerqvist and Carl Abraham Arfwedson, director of the Swedish East India Company. During the 1810s, under Arfwedson’s ownership, Listonhill became a hub of Stockholm’s social scene. Later, wholesaler Pehr Wikström acquired the property and made some alterations to the house. A descendant of Wikström still owns Listonhill, a testament to the enduring legacy of this historic villa. North of the main house, a green-painted wooden building once housed carriages and stables. Behind it sits the former coachman’s residence, renovated and expanded in the 1950s. West of Listonhill lies one of Sweden’s northernmost beech forests, planted in the 1820s at the initiative of Israel af Ström. Listonhill stands as a charming reminder of a bygone era. It beautifully blends architectural elegance with historical significance, nestled within Stockholm’s vibrant landscape.
