“May our government and our children live prosperous and eternal.” That’s what the inscription at the Chingunjav’s statue says. This imposing monument stands as a tribute to a remarkable figure in Mongolian history.

Let’s delve into the story of Chingunjav. He wasn’t just anyone. Chingunjav was a Khalkha prince who ruled the Khotogoids. He became one of the main leaders of the 1756-57 rebellion in Outer Mongolia.

Imagine Outer Mongolia under the Qing dynasty. Chingunjav fought for his people’s independence from the Manchu-led Qing dynasty of China. Though his rebellion was unsuccessful, his spirit lived on. Nowadays he is hailed as a fighter for Outer Mongolia’s independence.

Chingunjav was born in 1710. His birthplace was near Lake Sangiin Dalai Nuur. His father, Bandi, was the local ruler. Chingunjav followed in his father’s footsteps. He made a career in the Manchu military. Eventually, Chingunjav rose to the rank of an assistant general.

But destiny had other plans.

In 1755, a plot began to brew. Chingunjav and Amursana conspired to start a rebellion. But their plans were discovered. The Manchu separated them. Chingunjav was sent to fight in Uriankhai. Amursana was summoned to Beijing. This led to unrest among the Khalkha nobility.

The summer of 1756 marked the start of Chingunjav’s rebellion. He left his post. He gathered troops. Chingunjav sent a letter to the Qianlong Emperor. But support from other nobles was limited. Chingunjav never commanded more than 2,000 troops.

The Manchu forces advanced. Chingunjav retreated north. His army dwindled through desertions. In January 1757, he was captured. Only fifty men remained with him.

Chingunjav faced a tragic end. He and his family were executed in Beijing. The Manchu brutally suppressed the rebellion. Nobles suspected of sympathizing with Chingunjav also faced execution.

Despite his failed rebellion, Chingunjav became a legend. A monument was erected near his attributed fort in 1978. Statues of him appeared in Mörön in 1992 and 2010. This statue in Ulaanbaatar was erected in 2012. It is a 10-meter-tall bronze tribute. It weighs five tons. Artist Sh.Tengisbold designed it.

Standing here before Chingunjav’s statue, consider his legacy. He was a fighter for freedom. This statue is a reminder of Mongolia’s enduring spirit. It embodies the hope for a prosperous future.
