“Devotion to the spouse of Mary.” That phrase echoes through the history of Igreja Sāo José in São Paulo. This devotion marks it as a cherished landmark in this vibrant city.

Igreja Sāo José stands as a testament to faith. It also stands as a community’s enduring spirit. The story of Sāo José in the city of Sāo Paulo has 29 communities dedicated to the saint.

One of the oldest devotions began in Jardim Guancā. Dona Conceição Aparecida da Silva Escobar took the first step. This was toward the emergence of Igreja Sāo José’s history in 1973.

Many efforts went into creating this special place. There was dedication, many parades and processions. Finally in 2004, the Paróquia Matriz Sāo José Esposo Da Virgem Maria was created. The priests of the Congregação Sāo José now administer it.

Sāo José is one of the most popular saints in the Catholic church. He protects the Catholic Church. He is the patron saint of workers and families. In the state of Sāo Paulo, two cities bear his name. They are Sāo José dos Campos and Sāo José do Rio Preto. These cities are about 90 km and 450 km from the capital.

In 1857, the small church became Capela. It was dedicated to Sāo José. In 1912, they demolished the first chapel. This made way for a new church. It was completed in 1930.

The diocese of Rio Preto was created. It received the title of Sāo José as co-patron. Today, the diocese has two parishes. It also has a cathedral dedicated to the Saint.

Parishes celebrate Sāo José Operário solemnly on May 1st. They value the world of work. They also value the workers. Parishes and chapels have Sāo José as their patron.

In the Arquidiocese de Ribeirão Preto, three parishes are dedicated to the patron. Two of them are centuries old. The oldest is in Cravinhos. It was founded in 1898. Another parish is in the central region. It was established in 1964. But it was a chapel since 1903. The third parish is dedicated to Sāo José Operário.

Five parishes are dedicated to Sāo José in the diocese of Santo André. The parishes are in Santo André, Sāo Bernardo do Campo, and Ribeirão Pires. There are two in Mauá. Despite the pandemic, the Paróquia Sāo José do Baeta Neves did the patron saint’s novena online.

The devotion to the spouse of Mary is the highest title. It is granted to a man. The Arquidiocese de Sāo Paulo emphasizes this.

As you stand before Igreja Sāo José, remember its rich history. It embodies the enduring faith of its community. It shows that even in a large metropolis, a place of devotion can flourish.
