Founded way back in 1807 its roots trace to three earlier institutions. The Balthasar-Neumann Polytechnic the Wuerzburg Commercial College and the Wuerzburg School of Applied Arts all contributed to its rich heritage. The THWS wasn’t always what it is today. It underwent a significant restructuring in 1971. This is when it officially opened its doors welcoming 1566 students.
Initially the THWS offered courses in architecture civil engineering business administration and graphic design in Wuerzburg. Schweinfurt housed the electrical mechanical and industrial engineering programs. Think about that for a moment. The THWS expanded rapidly. New subjects like social work plastics engineering and computer science were added over the years reflecting society’s evolving needs. The THWS even established a campus in Aschaffenburg before it became an independent university in 2000.
The THWS’s commitment to progress is evident in its impressive infrastructure. A stunning circular teaching building was constructed in Schweinfurt between 2003 and 2004. This state of the art facility boasts modern computer labs spacious assembly halls and air-conditioned multimedia rooms. In 2011 the university acquired new buildings in both Wuerzburg and Schweinfurt further enhancing its capacity for teaching and research.
The THWS isn’t just about classrooms and lectures. It is a hub of research with multiple application-oriented institutes. The Institute for Applied Logistics IAL for example collaborates with industry partners and receives support from organizations like the Confederation of Logistics. The Institute for Digital Engineering IDEE focuses on Industry 4.0 including artificial intelligence and robotics. The CERI a center within the IDEE even received 120 million euros in funding for a new building in Schweinfurt. This is not just a university.
