Curious about a church that witnessed centuries of change? Right here stands the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Locally it may be more commonly called the Church of St. Gabriel. This church is not just a building. It’s a testament to Prague’s rich religious and artistic history.

Let’s step back in time to 1964. That was when this basilica was registered as a cultural monument. This designation included the Benedictine monastery beside it. Imagine the dedication needed to preserve such beauty for generations.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is at the southern foot of Petřín hill. Notice its Neo-Romanesque style. This architectural choice makes it unique. The style incorporates elements of early Christian and Byzantine art. The church features a two-nave basilica. It also has a semicircular presbytery.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary has a story beyond its architecture. The monastery linked to the church has its own interesting past. Constructed between 1888 and 1891 the chapel was dedicated to the Annunciation. Peter Desiderio Lenz decorated it. He was the founder of the Beuronese school of art.

Political tensions after World War I affected the monastery. It functioned only until 1919. Then the monks departed. The state bought the monastery. The church continues its function.

To get here, consider taking bus No. 176. Get off at the Holečkova stop. It’s just two stops from Kinského zahrada. If you prefer driving, parking is available by the church.

Consider the beautiful art, and consider the history. The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary stands as a symbol of faith, resilience and artistic vision.
