Marvelous isn’t it? The Palais Episcopal stands before you a testament to centuries of history. This magnificent Baroque palace wasn’t always the seat of the Archbishop of Strasbourg. Initially built between 1724 and 1732 it began life as the Hu00f4tel du grand Doyennu00e9 the residence of the Dean of the Grand Chapter of Strasbourg Cathedral.
Imagine the scene. Frederic Constantin de La Tour d’Auvergne a member of the prestigious House of La Tour d’Auvergne commissioned this impressive structure. Robert de Cotte renowned architect who also designed the Palais Rohan provided the plans. Auguste Malo-Saussard a talented architect brought those plans to life. The Hu00f4tel du grand Doyennu00e9 was truly innovative for its time. It boasted two nearly identical ornate facades a grand portal a large courtyard and a small garden. This architectural masterpiece served as a model for many stately 18th-century hotels in Strasbourg.
The French Revolution brought significant change. The Hu00f4tel du grand Doyennu00e9 was confiscated becoming state property. It changed hands several times before the Catholic Church reacquired it in 1855. That same year the palace became the official residence and workplace of the Bishop of Strasbourg a role upgraded to Archbishop in 1988. The Palais Episcopal continues to serve this purpose today.
Notice the grand staircase. It’s a true masterpiece. The symmetrical facades with their small-paned windows and elegant ironwork are equally impressive. Although much of the original furniture was dispersed during the Revolution it was largely reconstituted in the 19th century. The chapel’s beautiful gilded wooden altar is a highlight. The grand salon’s floors designed in the style of Versailles add to the palace’s opulence.
Look closely. The sculpted ornamentation on the facades is likely the work of Laurent Leprince a skilled sculptor. He incorporated cornucopias symbols of abundance reflecting the wealth and power associated with the palace. The Palais Episcopal is more than just a building.
