Whispers of servants and families linger in the air here in Sluhy. This village carries echoes of its past. We are standing in Sluhy, a municipality in the Prague-East District. It is part of the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Around 700 people call Sluhy home.

The name Sluhy might come from “sluha” meaning servant. So it could be “the village of servants”. Another idea suggests it’s from the personal name Sluha. That would mean “the village of Sluhas”. Take your pick. Both versions connect us to the people who shaped this place.

Sluhy’s story began long ago. The first written record of Sluhy is from 1238. But get this, the Church of Saint Adalbert was here even earlier. Documents mention it between 967 and 999. That means people have gathered in Sluhy for over a thousand years. Imagine the stories those early stones could tell.

This area is mostly flat farmland. The Mratínský potok stream flows through Sluhy. This stream brought life to the land. It supported the people of Sluhy through centuries.

There is something unique about Sluhy. It is its peaceful, rural setting. Unlike other places, no major roads or railways cut through it. Sluhy remains a tranquil escape.

Here in Sluhy, the Church of Saint Adalbert stands as a landmark. It started as a Romanesque church. Later, it was rebuilt in Gothic style around 1270. In the 18th century, late Baroque touches gave it its current look. Notice the blend of styles. Each era has left its mark on the Church of Saint Adalbert.

Don’t miss the Baroque bell tower. It dates back to the 16th century. The tower once held three bells. Sadly, someone stole one. Beside the tower is the old presbytery built in 1780.

Sluhy may be small but it holds layers of history. From its possible origin as a village of servants to its ancient church. Sluhy offers a glimpse into the past. Its peaceful setting invites you to imagine life here centuries ago. As we leave Sluhy, remember its name. Think of the people who called this village home.
