Standing here, before the First Portugese Evangelical Church, I want to ask you to travel back in time with me. It is the late 1960s. Toronto is becoming a new home for Portuguese immigrants. The First Portugese Evangelical Church’s story is deeply intertwined with the experiences of these newcomers.

The First Portugese Evangelical Church actually started in Streetsville. The Silva family united with Urbano Soares and his wife in the Streetsville church. They yearned for a spiritual home that spoke their language and understood their culture.

Pastor Manuel Marques visited Canada. He spoke with these brethren and shared their vision. He saw the need for a Portuguese pastor to serve the growing immigrant community in Toronto. Pastor Marques desired to start a Portuguese church.

The first meetings were held at Streetsville Baptist Church. Pastor Marques started a radio program. It was called “Asas do Atlantico” and preached the gospel in Portuguese. The small congregation then moved to Door Hope Tabernacle on Gladstone Ave.

More people joined like Saul Candido and his family. The Scott Mission on Spadina Ave offered them a hall. The First Portugese Evangelical Church had found a temporary home.

In January 1969, the church was officially registered with the Canadian government. It was independent and not affiliated with any denomination. This ensured the church could serve its community without outside influence.

In 1976 Pastor Marques returned to the United States. Pastor Manuel Mathews took over.

A significant moment came in May 1983. The First Portugese Evangelical Church bought the building that once belonged to the First Portuguese Club. It was at 132 Nassau St. After renovations, a dedication service was held in October 1983. The church has been here ever since.

In September 1992, Pastor Joao Duarte became the pastor.

The First Portugese Evangelical Church has been a spiritual anchor. It supported the Portuguese community as it established itself in Toronto. The church offered a familiar sense of belonging in a new land. It continues to be a light and a testament, offering blessings and salvation.

The First Portugese Evangelical Church stands as a testament to faith. It embodies community and perseverance. It is a place where Portuguese immigrants found solace and strength. Their legacy lives on in this vibrant congregation.
