Envision this a temple bell rings softly in the distance. This is Myohoji Temple. It stands as a testament to Tokyo’s rich history. Founded in 1615 Myohoji Temple offers a serene escape. It is found in the southern part of Koenji.

Let’s delve into Myohoji Temple’s story. Its iron gate showcases a unique blend of Japanese and Western designs. This gate is now an important cultural asset. Imagine the craftsmanship required to create such a beautiful structure.

During the rainy season Myohoji Temple transforms into a vibrant oasis. Japanese iris and hydrangea bloom around the temple’s pond. Many people visit to admire this traditional scene. The colorful flowers create a picturesque view.

Myohoji Temple is known for its Joya no Kane ceremony. This Japanese New Year bell-ringing event is special. On New Year’s Eve you can strike the temple’s huge copper bell. The bell dates back to 1725. The first 100 people in line get to ring it. The ceremony begins late on New Year’s Eve and ends early on New Year’s Day. Hot food stalls and amazake warm the cold night. Amazake is a sweet fermented rice drink.

Spring brings another wave of beauty to Myohoji Temple. Elegant sakura flowers bloom creating a magical atmosphere. Imagine strolling through the temple grounds surrounded by cherry blossoms. The delicate pink petals create a breathtaking view.

Myohoji Temple is easily accessible. It is a short walk from Shin-Koenji Station and Higashi-Koenji Station. Both stations are on the Tokyo Metro. This makes visiting Myohoji Temple convenient for everyone.

Stepping into Myohoji Temple is like stepping back in time. The temple’s history and natural beauty offer a unique experience. From the iron gate to the seasonal flowers every detail tells a story. Myohoji Temple embodies the heart and soul of Koenji.

But there is also Myohoji Temple, known as Myohoji Temple. It is situated in Tokyo’s Toshima district. It is also called Gesshozan Myohoji Temple. This temple belongs to the Nichiren sect. Myohoji Temple was established in 1616 by Nichikan.

In 1634 the temple was relocated to the city. This move was part of an expansion project. The Tokugawa family rebuilt it entirely. In 1908 Myohoji Temple merged with Myogyoji Temple. They moved to Ikebukuro and took the name Myogyoji Temple. The name changed back to Myohoji Temple in 1911. Air raids in 1945 damaged the temple. Redevelopment led to its relocation in 1949.

Myohoji Temple follows the Fuji Monryu tradition. Today it is part of the Koryu Homeikai of the Nichiren sect. Nichikan who founded the temple was the 16th head priest of Shimojo Myorenji Temple. After the Meiji era it became part of the Honmon sect. In 1941 it joined other groups to form the Nichiren sect.

Most of Shimojo Myorenji Temple’s former branch temples joined the Nichiren Shoshu sect after World War II. Myohoji Temple remained with the Nichiren sect. It is the only Nichiren sect temple that was formerly a branch temple of Shimojo Myorenji Temple.
