In 1984, a new chapter began in the story of Tsing Yi Island. This was the year Tung Wah Group of Hospitals S. C. Gaw Memorial College opened its doors. The anticipation was palpable as the first students, a mix of boys and girls mostly from the island, filled the hallways. This Tung Wah Group of Hospitals S. C. Gaw Memorial College wasn’t just another school. It represented a significant milestone, becoming the third secondary school on Tsing Yi Island. It was also the 13th secondary school established by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, a well-known charitable organization in Hong Kong. The college stands as a testament to the vision of Anthony T. Gaw, a former Tung Wah director. He honored his father, S.C. Gaw, by naming the school after him. This act commemorated S.C. Gaw’s contributions to society. The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals S. C. Gaw Memorial College’s motto, “Diligence, Frugality, Loyalty, and Faithfulness,” reflects the values instilled in its students. These four virtues are not just words etched on a lacquered board in the assembly hall. They are also the names of the school’s four houses, each represented by a vibrant color: red for Diligence, orange for Frugality, yellow for Loyalty, and blue for Faithfulness. These colors symbolize the energy and spirit of the college. Interestingly, construction delays meant the first classes were held in borrowed classrooms at the nearby Po Leung Kuk 1983 Board of Directors’ College. Imagine the students finally moving into their new building in March 1984. The official opening ceremony, a grand event presided over by senior government official Ng Poon-wai, took place in January 1986. Years later, in 2005, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals S. C. Gaw Memorial College expanded further with a new extension. This expansion accommodated the growing student population and enhanced the learning environment. This growth reflects the college’s ongoing commitment to education. The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals S. C. Gaw Memorial College continues to nurture generations of students, upholding its motto and contributing to the vibrant community of Tsing Yi Island.
