Before you stands the Anton Ukmar Bust a tribute to a remarkable life. This isn’t just a statue it’s a window into a history of revolution and resilience. Anton Ukmar born in 1900 in Prosecco near Trieste lived a life far beyond the quiet countryside of his childhood.

He started his working life as a railway employee in Trieste. His early involvement in the socialist movement blossomed into active participation in the Italian Communist Party. His activism led to his transfer to Genoa then arrest and dismissal. This didn’t deter him.

Ukmar’s commitment to antifascism led him on an extraordinary journey. He participated in clandestine operations against fascism in Trieste working to unite national revolutionaries against the regime. He escaped to Ljubljana then to Paris where he played a key role in the national commission of the Italian and Yugoslav Communist Parties.

His dedication took him to the Soviet Union where he attended the Lenin School and a communist university in Moscow. He was then sent to Spain where he played a crucial role in the Spanish Civil War serving as a counterintelligence officer and a political commissar. His courage and skills were clearly valued.

The war was only one chapter in his long struggle. After the Republican army’s retreat he was interned in Argelès-sur-Mer. He later became an instructor in the resistance movement against Italian occupation in Ethiopia. He was later arrested and imprisoned in France before escaping in 1942.

After Italy’s surrender in 1943 Ukmar returned to Italy and joined the fight for liberation in Liguria. He became a commander in the partisan movement and played a vital role in the liberation of Genoa. He was honored for his efforts with honorary citizenship in Genoa.

Returning to his homeland he held various positions within the Yugoslav Communist Party. He became a member of the executive committee of the Slovenian Communist Party. He also served on the board of the Slovene-Italian Antifascist Union and the partisan association.

Ukmar’s remarkable life ended in Koper in 1978. He is remembered not only for his political activism but also for his unwavering commitment to the fight for freedom and justice. This bust stands as a symbol of his extraordinary contribution to history. Look closely at the details. You can almost feel the weight of his experiences in every line and every shadow on this bronze monument to a man whose life spanned revolutions wars and ultimately peace.
