A graceful curve against the Warsaw sky. That’s the Wiadukt Markiewicza. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a testament to a bygone era a blend of engineering and art. Built in 1904 the Wiadukt Markiewicza gracefully connects the slopes of Powiśle with the street below.

The name itself whispers a story. Stanislaw Markiewicz a pioneering physician and social activist lends his name to this elegant structure. He was a champion for the poor especially children. He founded summer colonies for underprivileged kids. A true visionary. His work touched many lives long before this viaduct was even conceived. Ironically enough Markiewicz probably walked this very street numerous times. As president of the Warsaw Hygienic Society its building was close by.

Imagine the construction in 1900. A spiral descent planned for Karowa Street. The ambitious project envisioned lifts or even escalators. Instead Warsaw residents used simple wooden steps for years after the war. This shows the evolution of transportation and urban planning.

The design is a marvel of neo-Renaissance style. The balustrade is a work of art itself. Ornate details adorn its length. The sculptures by Jan Woydyga are unforgettable. The Warsaw Mermaid proudly stands. Other figures represent the city’s industry education and river life. The sculptures have survived the test of time. Their presence gives this viaduct a distinct character. They weren’t always there though. The original zinc sculptures were replaced in 1914 after they decayed.

The Wiadukt Markiewicza was essential. It linked the old aristocratic part of Warsaw to the poorer Powiśle district. Today Powiśle is a vibrant trendy area. The old contrast between the two parts of the city is mostly gone. But the viaduct stands as a reminder of that rich history. The Markiewicza Viaduct stands tall. It connects past and present in a visually stunning way. It’s a symbol of Warsaw’s enduring spirit. And a worthy stop on our tour.
