The gentle chime of bells beckons you closer to Nossa Senhora Aparecida e Sao Matias. This charming church in Sao Paulo’s Lauzane Paulista neighborhood isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and community.

Nossa Senhora Aparecida e Sao Matias wasn’t built overnight. Its story began much earlier in 1968. Father Bernardo Gora sought a place to hold Mass for the people of Pedreira. Locals like Mr Sava Popovick and his wife helped. They found an abandoned warehouse a former mineral water bottling plant. It became the humble beginning of the Capela de Nossa Senhora Aparecida.

For years this small chapel served the community. It hosted literacy classes sewing and typing courses. A vibrant youth group the FOJOCA formed. They even won a city-wide walking competition. Their victory brought attention to the growing community. The chapel soon became too small.

Father Kirano Ridge a priest with a vision saw the need for a larger space. He and Father Bernardo secured a significant donation from Sao Matias in Germany. A new community center and eventually the church itself were built.

In 1979 parishioners made a pilgrimage to Aparecida do Norte to retrieve a statue of their patron saint. The inaugural Mass was a joyous occasion. During the ceremony another significant gift arrived. A statue of Saint Matthias donated by the Sao Matias community in Germany. This explains the church’s unique dual name Nossa Senhora Aparecida e Sao Matias.

The church continued to grow. It thrived under the care of many priests and the unwavering support of the community. Finally in 1997 the community was elevated to parish status. Nossa Senhora Aparecida e Sao Matias stands today as a symbol of faith resilience and the enduring power of community spirit. It’s more than just a building it’s a home a sanctuary and a vibrant part of Sao Paulo’s rich tapestry. Take a moment to appreciate the simple yet inviting architecture.
