Gazing at Kirche St. Katharina, one might initially be struck by its fortress-like presence. Yet, there’s a cheerful, welcoming aura about this unique structure. Kirche St. Katharina, completed in 1972, stands as a testament to clever architectural design. The architects, Wilhelm and Eugen O. Fischer, had a challenging task. They needed to create a peaceful sanctuary despite the church’s location on the busy Wehntalerstrasse. Their ingenious solution involved placing the entrance on the quieter, uphill side. They designed the street-facing wall as a windowless sound barrier, effectively separating the sacred interior from the traffic noise. This windowless design extends to most of the church’s walls. Daylight filters in softly through skylights positioned along the roof’s inner edge. This creates a dramatic, almost ethereal atmosphere inside Kirche St. Katharina. The church’s polygonal shape is further enhanced by the interplay of staggered walls and projections. This design element contributes to the building’s unique character. Inside, the pews are arranged in a semicircle around the altar, fostering a sense of community among worshippers. The floor, paved with reddish porphyry, seamlessly extends from the outside courtyard into the church, blurring the lines between the sacred space and the public realm. This continuity is a distinctive feature of Kirche St. Katharina. Adding to the artistic richness, sculptor Kurt Brunner contributed several pieces to the church’s interior. The red granite altar area, ambo, and baptismal font complement the porphyry flooring. Bronze accents appear in the cross, tabernacle, and candle holders. A statue of St. Katharina of Alexandria, the church’s patron saint, graces the wall near the altar area. A baroque statue of Mary resides in a niche at the back, and a concrete sculpture depicting the Wedding at Cana, also by Brunner, adds a modern touch. Tucked away below the main church, accessible from Wehntalerstrasse, lies the Krypta. This intimate space, also adorned with Brunner’s artistry, provides a quiet setting for smaller services and prayer. Kirche St. Katharina stands as a remarkable blend of modernist design and spiritual sanctuary, a true testament to architectural ingenuity. It’s a place where the hustle and bustle of city life fades away, replaced by the serene embrace of faith and community.
