Reupard’s Settlement Pioneer Burying Ground also known as Sherwood Pioneer Burying Ground holds the stories of those who first settled this land. Established around 1811 it served the community for over a century. Imagine the lives lived the hardships endured the hopes and dreams buried beneath the earth.

Peter Rupert a key figure in the area donated the land in 1839. Reupard’s Chapel a Wesleyan Methodist church was built a year later. The first school in Vaughan Township was even located on his property. He and his wife Susanna are themselves buried here. Fragments of their headstone remain within a central cairn. A cairn is a man-made pile of stones. This is a poignant reminder of the passage of time. These stones guard the memories of many pioneers. This act reminds us of the importance of preserving history even in the simplest of ways.

The cemetery officially closed in 1925. In 1966 the remaining headstones were gathered into the cairn you see before you. These stones stand as silent witnesses to the lives they once marked. Even though the original headstones are gone their stories live on in this place. They live on in the memories of those who lived in this area.

The oldest marker dates back to 1811 predating the official establishment of the church and cemetery. This speaks to the presence of a community even before formal structures were in place. The people who settled here had roots that extended back into the years before.

Today Reupard’s Settlement Pioneer Burying Ground is owned and maintained by the City of Vaughan. It stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the pioneers who built this community.
