Built in 1932, the Yonnobashi-dori Kado-kyō Bridge stands as a testament to Tokyo’s resilience. This steel railway overpass, spanning the central thoroughfare near Akasaka Mitsuke Station, has a fascinating history. The Yonnobashi-dori Kado-kyō Bridge gets its name from a street used by feudal lords during the Edo period. This Onari-kaido street, originally running from Sujikai-bashi to Ueno Park, crossed the area now occupied by the central thoroughfare beneath Yonnobashi-dori Kado-kyō Bridge. When the bridge was initially constructed, it was a striking feature of the landscape. There were no tall buildings nearby. People called the Sobu Line’s elevated tracks, passing over the Yonnobashi-dori Kado-kyō, “the great embankment of the east”. It offered unobstructed views for miles. Today, a pedestrian walkway runs beneath the Yonnobashi-dori Kado-kyō Bridge. It provides shelter for those passing through on rainy days. The bridge remains a landmark, offering a clear view towards Akasaka Mitsuke Station from the central thoroughfare, thanks to the absence of obstructing signal towers or other structures.
