Hidden in plain sight on Rua Bela Vista, the Igreja Deus Todo Poderoso whispers a story of faith, resilience, and controversy. Igreja Deus Todo Poderoso emerged in China in 1991. It’s a relatively new religious movement. The church’s core teaching revolves around the belief that Jesus Christ has returned to Earth. This time, not as a man, but as a Chinese woman, embodied as Almighty God. Igreja Deus Todo Poderoso accepts the Bible as sacred scripture for the Age of Law and the Age of Grace. However, they believe a more relevant guide lies in the pronouncements of Almighty God. These are compiled in “The Word Appears in the Flesh,” a million-word book serving as the movement’s primary text. The church believes in three stages of God’s work: the Age of Law, the Age of Grace, and the Age of Kingdom. They believe we are currently in the Age of Kingdom, where Almighty God is working to eradicate humanity’s sinful nature. Interestingly, Igreja Deus Todo Poderoso does not practice sacraments like baptism. They consider these practices relevant to the Age of Grace, not the present Age of Kingdom. One becomes a member by confessing Almighty God as the returned Jesus Christ and accepting the church’s beliefs. Igreja Deus Todo Poderoso has faced significant controversy. The Chinese government considers it a “xie jiao,” or heterodox teaching, and has accused it of various crimes. These accusations, often amplified in media, are vehemently denied by the church. Some scholars who have investigated the accusations suggest they are false or exaggerated. Adding to the complexity, some Christian opponents have also labeled Igreja Deus Todo Poderoso as heretical. Despite the controversy and repression in China, Igreja Deus Todo Poderoso has expanded globally. Thousands of members have sought refuge in countries like South Korea, the United States, and several others, establishing churches and even producing artistic works, including award-winning films.
