Established in 1920, the ASI Austrian Standards Institute, right here on Heinestrasse, has been shaping Austria’s technical landscape for over a century. Originally known as the Austrian Standards Committee for Industry and Trade, this organization started with a mere 13 committees. Their initial focus was on standards for mechanical and electrical engineering. Just a year later, in 1921, they published their very first standard, focusing on the seemingly mundane but essential metric screw threads. The ASI Austrian Standards Institute has evolved significantly over the years. It even weathered the storm of World War II, resuming independent operations and becoming a founding member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1946. The ASI Austrian Standards Institute’s role was solidified in 1954 with the Federal Act on Standardization. This act, still relevant today, legally recognized the institute’s important work. The ASI Austrian Standards Institute even delves into the world of brand valuation. In 2006, they introduced the ON rule ONR 168000, a tool for calculating the monetary value of a brand. And if you’re curious about diving masks or snorkels, the ASI Austrian Standards Institute has you covered. They’ve developed standards like ÖNORM S 4225 for diving masks and ÖNORM S 4223 for snorkels, ensuring safety and quality. The ASI Austrian Standards Institute, now known as Austrian Standards International since 2018, continues its crucial work from its headquarters here in Vienna.
