It boasted an extraordinary faculty. Many African Americans couldn’t find better job opportunities. This made the school’s faculty exceptionally dedicated.

Notable figures walked these very halls. Principals like Francis L Cardozo Sr Robert H Terrell and Anna J Cooper led the way. Carter G Woodson taught here. He later became a renowned historian. Even Christian Fleetwood a Medal of Honor recipient educated students here. Alumni went on to prestigious universities such as Harvard Yale and Brown. Many became influential educators and public figures.

The school moved in 1916. It was renamed Dunbar High School. This honored poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. The M Street building served various purposes. It housed junior high schools. It even sheltered the homeless. The building faced demolition at one point. But community support saved it. Its landmark status helped secure its future.

Today this historic building serves the community. It houses the Perry School Community Services Inc. This non-profit center provides essential health and community services.
