Across the Pearl River Delta a marvel of engineering stands tall. This is the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link a bridge-tunnel system connecting Shenzhen and Zhongshan. It wasn’t always this way. For years Shenzhen tried to be part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. They envisioned a double-Y-shaped design. But China chose a single-Y leaving Shenzhen out.
The idea for a separate link emerged in 2008. It was shelved due to concerns about the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge’s success. Eventually the Guangdong government included it in its 12th five-year plan. Construction began in 2017. It finally opened on June 30 2024.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is more than just a bridge. It’s a symbol of persistence and ambition. It’s 49.7 kilometers long. It includes a 6.7 km tunnel and 19 bridges. The longest continuous bridge section is 22.5 km. Around 15.5 km of that is over the sea. The eight lanes allow speeds of up to 100 km/h.
It connects the Guangshen Expressway to the Jihe Expressway and the Zhongjiang Expressway. The travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan is now under 30 minutes. Amazingly in its first month over 3 million vehicles crossed this impressive structure. The initial days after opening saw congestion. Drivers experienced hours of delays. Some opted for the Humen Bridge.
This incredible structure is a testament to China’s ambition. It’s a symbol of modern engineering. It’s also a vital link in the ever-growing economic landscape of the Pearl River Delta. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is more than just a bridge. It’s a gateway. It’s a connection. It’s a symbol of the future.
