Dalén was an ingenious inventor. He quickly expanded the business. He began manufacturing railway lights. He also made acetylene production machinery. The AGA-fyren owes its existence to Dalén’s brilliance. His inventions revolutionized lighthouse technology.
The real breakthrough came with an automatic lighthouse mechanism. It included the sun valve. It also had the intermittent light regulator. Dalén invented these in 1905. These were AGA’s first patented innovations. Lighthouses were few and primitive. Ships often ran aground on rocky shores. Sometimes wreckers misled ships with false fires. Transporting fuel to remote lighthouses was a major problem.
Acetylene produced a bright light. It proved to be an excellent fuel for lighthouses. Burning it 24 hours a day was too expensive. The AGA intermittent light regulator reduced fuel consumption by 90 percent. The sun valve cut fuel consumption by another four percent. Lighthouses could now operate at a low cost. They could also be left unattended for long periods. The sun valve automatically lit them at dusk. It turned them off at dawn.
Many AGA lighthouses built in those days still operate all over the world. Some are even on the Great Lakes. In 1912, AGA won a contract. It was to build a lighthouse system for the Panama Canal. That same year, Dalén received the Nobel Prize in Physics. He got the prize for his inventions in lighthouse technology.
1912 was a year of triumph and tragedy. Dalén was badly injured in a gas explosion. He was developing safer gas cylinders. The accident left him permanently blind. Despite this, he continued to lead his company for 25 years. He remained at the helm until his death in 1937.
AGA’s American saga began in 1911. The American Gas Accumulator Co. was founded in New Jersey. This company sold AGA signal equipment throughout the United States. By the 1930s, it had seven acetylene plants. AGA also sold various lighthouse and signal equipment.
AGA air beacons guided mail planes. These flew between New York and San Francisco. Rapid flashing beacons marked the route every three miles. Pilots could always see at least two beacons. New inventions were constantly added to AGA’s product line. In its first 50 years, the company made cookers, cars, and film projectors. They even produced geological instruments.
Dalén also invented the AGA cooker. It was very fuel efficient. It could burn unattended for 24 hours. By 1934, it was sold worldwide. It was even manufactured in some 10 countries. The AGA oven remains an icon.
During the late 1960s, AGA focused on the gas sector. In 2000, it became part of The Linde Group. Today, it is the leading industrial gases supplier in the Nordic and Baltic region. AGA operates 100 production units. These are spread across 60 sites in eight countries.
