Fancy a bit of rock climbing? Then listen up because we are standing at the foot of Cheung Yan Shan.

Cheung Yan Shan stands to the east of Lantau Peak. It reaches a height of 443 meters. It features a boulder called Cheung Yan Rock on its summit.

Cheung Yan Shan is not so popular, but it does have an official hiking trail. This trail connects the South Lantau Country Trail and the Lantau Trail. Some call it Elephant Mountain. It is one of the Four Guardian Beasts of Tai O Village.

The adventurous among you might be interested in the climbing potential here. Recently, a bloc was developed on the eastern flank of Lantau Peak. Matthew Sze did the development and provided problem information. Access to the blocs is easiest from Tung Chung. You can take the #3M Bus to Pak Kung Au. From the bus stop, follow the Lantau Trail (Section 3) west. Continue until you reach Ngau Tong Au. Turn left. Follow the trail to Cheung Yan Shan. After about 500 meters, you will see the Cheung Yan bloc. The overall approach takes about 20 to 25 minutes.

The bloc is quite high. It has a slightly sketchy downclimb. Most lines finish at the holds indicated. So topping out is not common. For Problems 7 to 9, there is no clear-cut finish hold. So get comfortable standing on the slab. Climb as high as you are comfortable. Then simply jump off.

Here are some of the climbs you can try at Cheung Yan Shan. Lychee is a V3 climb. GuiFei is another V3. Emperor clocks in at V5. There is also Everlasting Regret, a V8 climb. For a real challenge, try Everlasting Regret Var, graded at V9.

So there you have it. Cheung Yan Shan offers hiking and climbing. A great place for outdoor adventures with stunning views.
