But it was once a hub of activity for a very different reason. This outcropping of land was once the small island of Iona. However, the construction of a causeway in the 1960s connected it to Sea Island. For decades the island has been home to the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. You are actually standing on top of it right now! But don’t worry, the sewage is treated and the smell is minimal. What you can smell is the fresh sea air. The plant treats wastewater for the entire Metro Vancouver. This includes Vancouver itself and the surrounding municipalities. The treated water is then discharged through a long pipe. This Iona Jetty stretches almost 4 kilometers out into the Strait of Georgia. The jetty is a popular spot for walking, cycling and fishing. So, as you can see, Iona Terminus is a place of contrasts.
