Could you spot duck island from up here? Ap Chau Teng, also known as the peak of Ap Chau, offers more than just a stunning view. It tells a story of resilience and transformation.

Ap Chau, or “duck island”, once thrived with over 700 inhabitants. Fishermen called this island home. They built their lives around the sea. In the 1960s and 70s many residents moved to cities in the United Kingdom. Newcastle upon Tyne and Edinburgh became new homes.

Let’s rewind to the early 20th century. Ap Chau was uninhabited then. Tanka fishermen arrived in the 1920s. They used the island to dry nets and repair boats. Informal settlements started in the 1940s.

In 1952, The True Jesus Church moved here. A wooden church was built. Fishermen converted and moved from their boats. They gathered here to pray. A concrete church replaced the wooden one in 1965.

The United States CARE program aided Ap Chau. A fresh water supply was installed in 1960. Water came from a reservoir in So Lo Pun. Ap Chau locals and the British Military built underground pipes.

Ap Chau Fishermen Village was constructed in 1961. Local fishermen and their families lived here. The United States CARE program and the British Government provided financial aid.

FMO Ap Chau Primary School opened in 1958. It was the island’s only primary school.

Before Hong Kong’s transfer of sovereignty, Ap Chau attracted illegal immigrants. They swam from mainland China. A well-lit public lavatory served as a beacon at night.

Today, Ap Chau has only a few permanent residents. The church remains active.

To promote tourism, the Ap Chau Story Room opened in 2018. It is located in the former FMO Ap Chau Primary School. It is open to the public on Sundays and public holidays.

Ap Chau’s Duck’s Eye Sea Arch is a sight to behold. It is a natural arch formed by seawater erosion. It stands 2 meters tall and 10 meters wide. Safe to walk through, it is a popular destination.

The northern part of Ap Chau is part of the Double Haven Special Area. It covers 0.8 hectare. It was designated in 2011.

Ap Chau obtains fresh water from mainland China. It arrives through an underground pipe.

From Ap Chau Teng, remember the stories of those who lived here. Envision the bustling village. Hear the echoes of the past. Ap Chau remains a testament to human adaptation and change.
