Cranford Memorial Methodist Church began as Pohick Episcopal Church. That first church stood here from 1730 to 1774. George Washington even suggested moving it. He thought a better location would serve the congregation more effectively.
After the Episcopal Church moved, the site remained empty for 50 years. Methodists began to grow in number. They first met in a log cabin. In 1857, they built Lewis Chapel on the site of the old Pohick Episcopal Church. The church was named for the minister who inspired the growth of the congregation.
As the congregation grew, Lewis Chapel was enlarged. The first “free” school for former slaves used the church for classes. Growth demanded a new church. In 1900, the Cranford Memorial Methodist Church we see today was built.
In 1953, Lewis Chapel was moved. It was connected to the new church. The original exterior clapboards were reversed. Architect Hayward Davis oversaw this work.
Look closely at the walkway. Oversized bricks cross the churchyard. They are thought to be from the first Pohick Church. An engraved stone marks the site. It is dated 1730-1774.
