He looked at the map of Canada, saw where Vancouver was. It was in 1952 and that’s how H. Gobind Khorana chose this city. Today, we honor Dr. H. Gobind Khorana. He was a man whose work unraveled the very code of life.
Dr. H. Gobind Khorana’s journey began in a small village. Raipur was in Punjab, British India. His father, a taxation clerk, valued education. Despite poverty, Khorana excelled. He obtained degrees from Punjab University. A government fellowship took him to England. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Liverpool.
A postdoctoral year with Vladimir Prelog in Zurich shaped his scientific philosophy. A later fellowship allowed him to work with G. W. Kenner and A. R. Todd in Cambridge. These experiences sparked his interest in proteins and nucleic acids.
In 1952, Dr. H. Gobind Khorana accepted a position at the British Columbia Research Council in Vancouver. The facilities were limited. However, he had freedom to explore. He began his groundbreaking work on nucleic acids. He synthesized important biomolecules.
His wife, Esther Elizabeth Sibler, brought stability to his life. They met in Switzerland. She provided a sense of purpose after years away from his homeland. They had three children.
In 1960, Dr. H. Gobind Khorana moved to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He became co-director of the Institute for Enzyme Research. His research focused on RNA’s role in protein synthesis.
