How did a journalist save the Vienna Woods? We’re standing before the Josef Schöffel Sculpture. It commemorates the man who single-handedly protected this vital natural resource. Josef Schöffel, born in 1832, was more than a journalist. He was a former army officer, a geologist, and a fierce advocate for nature. He served in the Austrian army from 1857-1863. Later he worked at the Geological Reichsanstalt, gaining valuable insights into the delicate balance of ecosystems. In 1870, the Vienna Woods faced a grave threat. The government, strapped for cash after the war against Prussia, planned to sell off large portions of the forest to timber merchants. Schöffel recognized the disastrous ecological consequences of this decision. He launched a fearless campaign in the “Neues Wiener Tagblatt” newspaper. His articles exposed corruption and mismanagement within the forestry administration. Schöffel meticulously documented the shady dealings of officials and timber merchants. He faced intense pressure. He received death threats and was accused of libel and slander. The authorities tried to silence him with lawsuits. But Schöffel persisted. His meticulous research and unwavering dedication rallied public support. The citizens of Vienna, recognizing the importance of the Vienna Woods, joined his cause. The pressure mounted, and in 1872, the government reversed its decision. The Vienna Woods were saved, thanks to the courage and tenacity of Josef Schöffel. This sculpture stands as a testament to his legacy. It reminds us that one person, armed with truth and determination, can make a world of difference. It also reminds us of the preciousness of the Vienna Woods. This “green lung” of Vienna continues to provide respite and recreation to this day.
