Kovárské stráně

“Lost, are we?” a voice chirped. We find ourselves at Kovárské stráně, a hidden gem near the village of Zákolany. Kovárské stráně isn’t just a pretty hillside. This nature reserve, established in 1987, protects a unique haven for heat-loving plants. Kovárské stráně sits on the slopes above Zákolanský potok (Zákolany stream). The south and southwest-facing slopes create a warm microclimate. This allows rare species to thrive. The protected area is about 1.42 hectares. It lies within the Okolí Okoře Nature Park. Imagine yourself walking along the unmarked paths that crisscross Kovárské stráně. The red-marked tourist trail runs through the valley below. This trail connects the Budeč Slavic fortified settlement and the ruins of Okoř Castle. Now, look closer. Among the grasses, you’ll find the Adonis vernalis, a small but vibrant flower. Hundreds of these protected plants bloom here each spring. Kovárské stráně is also home to other interesting flora. You might spot the Austrian astragalus, spring primrose, or the intriguing broomrape. This parasitic plant latches onto the roots of sage. Several sage varieties, including meadow sage and woodland sage, grow here. Kovárské stráně isn’t just a botanical paradise. It’s a buzzing ecosystem. Look out for the oil beetle, the green woodpecker, or the agile lizard. The area was once used for agricultural purposes. Now, careful management ensures the survival of this special place. Controlled grazing by sheep and goats helps maintain the delicate balance. Regular mowing prevents the overgrowth of certain plants. However, the beauty of the Adonis vernalis has made it a target for illegal picking. So, let’s appreciate its beauty here, where it belongs, at Kovárské stráně.
