Whispers of a fire dragon weave through the vibrant streets of Tai Hang. Have you heard them? Tai Hang isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a story etched in fire and whispers, nestled in the heart of Hong Kong Island. Tai Hang, meaning “Big Water Channel,” was once a humble Hakka village. Farmers and fishermen lived simple lives. They lived near the Causeway Bay waterfront. Then, over a century ago, disaster struck. A typhoon raged, followed by a devastating plague. As the villagers rebuilt their lives, a python slithered into Tai Hang and devoured their livestock. Some whispered that the python was the son of the Dragon King, seeking vengeance. A soothsayer offered a solution. A fire dance, lasting three days and nights during the Mid-Autumn Festival, was the only way to appease the wrath of the dragon. The villagers crafted a magnificent dragon from straw, adorned it with incense sticks, and set it ablaze. Accompanied by the rhythmic beat of drums and the crackle of firecrackers, they danced through the streets. The plague vanished. Since 1880, the Tai Hang fire dragon dance has become an annual spectacle. A 67-meter-long fire dragon weaves through the streets near Victoria Park, commemorating the village’s resilience. The tradition endured, pausing only during the Japanese occupation, the 1967 disturbances, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Tai Hang today is a blend of old and new. Luxurious private apartments now stand alongside older residential blocks. Trendy restaurants and cafes line the streets. They offer a modern contrast to the traditional fire dragon dance. This area is a testament to the ever-evolving spirit of Hong Kong. Tai Hang, once a quiet fishing village, is now a vibrant neighborhood. Yet, the whispers of the fire dragon remain, reminding us of its rich past.
