Did you know that St Joan of Arc Catholic Academy wasn’t always known by that name? Standing before this impressive building you’re looking at a piece of Scarborough history. This wasn’t always a Catholic high school. Its story begins much earlier in 1965 as Tabor Park Vocational School a less academically focused high school serving the Scarborough community. The school was designed by the prominent modernist architects Webb Zerafa and Menkes. Think brown bricks and a central courtyard a design that still shapes the school’s layout today.
Tabor Park was later replaced by Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School in 1989. This was a significant moment for the community. The school relieved overcrowding at other Catholic high schools in the area. Jean Vanier served its students well for over three decades. The school’s first principal Michael Leroux guided those first 198 grade 9 students.
But the school’s history took a surprising turn. In 2020 following allegations against Jean Vanier the school was renamed St Joan of Arc Catholic Academy. The name change reflected a desire for a fresh start and a renewed commitment to its values. The school’s current emblem keeps the cross from the Vanier insignia. A fleur-de-lis and a sword now stand at its centre.
Today St Joan of Arc Catholic Academy continues to educate students. The school boasts impressive facilities. There are state-of-the-art science labs computer labs and even a chapel. Its diverse student body reflects Scarborough’s multicultural environment. St Joan of Arc offers many programs. These programs include the Arts Technology and Athletics. The school also places a strong emphasis on community service. Students regularly participate in food drives and fundraisers. They support local and international charities.
