How many stories does this magnificent Powder Tower hold? Standing before the Powder Tower or Prašná brána its Gothic elegance captivates. This iconic structure is one of Prague’s original thirteen city gates separating the Old Town from the New Town. Its construction began in 1475 under the direction of master mason Václav. The tower was envisioned not as a fortress but as a stunning entrance a welcoming gateway to the city. King Vladislav II even gifted the tower to Prague’s city council as a coronation present. Interesting fact the tower was initially known as the New Tower.

The Powder Tower’s design was inspired by the celebrated architect Peter Parler known for his work on the Charles Bridge. However political turmoil forced Vladislav II to relocate halting construction. He only returned in 1485 to live in Prague Castle for the remainder of his life. Kings only returned to use the tower again for coronation ceremonies starting in 1836. They would pass through it on their way to St Vitus Cathedral.

The tower acquired its current name Powder Tower or Powder Gate in the 17th century because it served as a gunpowder storehouse. Sadly the Powder Tower suffered significant damage during the Battle of Prague. The sculptures adorning the tower underwent a complete replacement in 1876. This impressive structure stands as a testament to Prague’s rich history. The recent renovations promise the tower will continue to grace Prague for many generations to come.

A walk around its base allows one to appreciate the intricate stonework and imagine the lives touched by this architectural masterpiece.
