Emerging from a patchwork of ten separate plots, Nova Gerty stands as a testament to São Caetano do Sul’s dynamic growth. Nova Gerty’s story begins in the early 20th century. Families, primarily of Italian, German, and Northeastern Brazilian descent, sought new beginnings in this burgeoning area. The Leandrini family were among the first settlers, laying the foundation for what would become a vibrant community. Other families, including the Cal, Canger, Ferro, Fiorotti, Gonzaga, Heinsfurter, Lorenzoni, Roveri, Schon, and Scotá, joined them. Together, they transformed the landscape, building homes and businesses, and creating the heart of Nova Gerty. The name itself is a blend of two earlier settlements: Vila Nova and Vila Gerty. This naming convention reflects the neighborhood’s unique origin. Even today, there’s some confusion surrounding the official name. Originally designated “Nova Gerte” in a 1968 decree, it wasn’t until 2005 that “Nova Gerty” became the officially recognized name. This seemingly small detail highlights the evolving nature of the neighborhood. Nova Gerty isn’t just a residential area. It also boasts recreational spaces like the CIEE Alcina Dantas Feijão sports center. Locals often refer to it as “Águias de Nova Gerte”. The center offers various amenities, including sports courts, a gymnasium, swimming pools, and even a small wooded area. Adjacent to the center is the José Tortorello District Stadium, a significant landmark for local sports enthusiasts. For those seeking a more tranquil escape, Nova Gerty offers Parque José Agostinho Leal. This park provides a serene setting for leisurely walks, children’s playtime, or simply relaxing amidst the trees. A revitalization project in 2020 further enhanced the park’s appeal, adding exercise equipment, a designated pet area, and updated playground facilities. The park also holds a special connection to Northeastern Brazilian culture. A statue of Padre Cícero, a revered figure in the Northeast, stands at the park’s entrance. The park itself is named in honor of José Agostinho Leal, a long-serving local politician with Northeastern roots. This blend of history, recreation, and cultural homage makes Nova Gerty a microcosm of São Caetano do Sul’s rich tapestry.
