The school’s main building stands out with its red brick facade. It features multiple wings surrounding an asphalted schoolyard. This yard opens towards the south. A portico invites students and visitors into the heart of Nytorpsskolan.
The Stockholm City Museum recognizes the school’s architectural qualities. Details like window placements and massive doors contribute to its charm. In January 2014, Nytorpsskolan merged with Hammarbyskolan. Hammarbyskolan was then renamed Hammarbyskolan Norra. However, in 2018, Nytorpsskolan regained its independent status.
For two decades, Nytorpsskolan was home to Roma Kulturklass. This special class catered to Romani children. It offered bilingual education in Swedish and Romanes. The class had its own dedicated spaces within the school.
However, Roma Kulturklass faced challenges. In 2016, the Swedish Schools Inspectorate criticized the class for shortcomings. These shortcomings related to instruction, safety, and grading. Faced with potential fines, the decision was made to close Roma Kulturklass in November 2016.
