Gazing across the waters, can you envision a bridge built atop sunken remnants of the past? Right here, before you stands Kastellholmsbron, a seemingly unassuming bridge connecting Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen. Kastellholmsbron takes its name from the Kastellet fortress on Kastellholmen. Its history is far more intriguing than its modest appearance suggests. The first bridge, likely built in the 1640s, was a wooden structure, considerably longer than the current one, located southeast of where we stand now. Over time, land uplift brought the shores of Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen closer together. Around 1670, a new piled wooden bridge appeared east of the original. A small harbor formed between these two bridges, accessible via drawbridges on both. The Swedish Navy utilized this harbor for its galleys in the 1720s. This harbor eventually proved too small, leading to a new harbor on northern Skeppsholmen. In 1818, yet another bridge arose, constructed over a sunken barge and another wreck. The Kastellholmsbron we see today was built in 1880. It’s a concrete structure with iron railings. It underwent renovations, notably in 1936. And finally, in 1961, it received its current name, Kastellholmsbron. Interestingly, passing under the bridge is prohibited. This seemingly simple bridge has silently witnessed centuries of change, from wooden structures to concrete and iron, from bustling harbors to quiet waters.
