Seven thousand seven hundred souls. That’s how many people call Černošice home. A town nestled near Prague’s southwest edge. But Černošice’s story stretches far beyond its current population.

Černošice isn’t just a modern suburb. It’s a place with a rich history. Its roots reach deep into the 11th century. Dolní Mokropsy a part of present-day Černošice was first mentioned in 1088. Horní Černošice joined the narrative in 1115. These villages became significant trade hubs. They sat at the crossroads of two vital routes. One led from Prague to Bechyně. The other connected Prague to Karlštejn Castle.

Imagine the clatter of wagons. Picture merchants bartering goods. Hear the clip-clop of horses’ hooves. This is the pulse of early Černošice. A bustling center of commerce and exchange.

Then came the Thirty Years’ War. In 1639 Swedish forces swept through. Černošice was ravaged. Burned to ashes. Its population plummeted. War losses epidemics and emigration left their mark. The town’s prosperity lay in ruins. Its future uncertain.

But Černošice endured. The Zbraslav Monastery held ownership for many years. From 1292 until the monastery’s dissolution in 1785. The land changed hands multiple times thereafter. In 1825 Count Friedrich Oettingen-Wallerstein acquired the estate. Cyril Bartoň of Dobenín became the final owner in 1910.

The arrival of the railway in 1862 marked a turning point. A new line linked Prague and Plzeň. This spurred a surge in tourism and construction. Lidos sprang up along the Berounka River. Villas rose as summer homes for wealthy Pragues. Černošice shed its agricultural skin. It transformed into a prestigious residential area.

The two halves of Černošice Horní and Dolní merged in 1864. They separated again in 1920. Finally in 1950 they reunited along with Dolní Mokropsy. Černošice received town status in 1969. A testament to its resilience and enduring appeal.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands as a silent witness to all this. First mentioned in 1352 it is Černošice’s oldest building. Rebuilt in Baroque style in the early 18th century. It houses a magnificent Baroque altar dating from 1713.

Today Černošice is a thriving blend of history and modernity. A testament to its people’s spirit. A place where past and present intertwine. A town that continues to flourish. A vibrant community near Prague. This is Černošice.
