Look at the Branik Bridge. It is a long and graceful structure. The Branik Bridge, also known as the Bridge of Intelligence, is a reinforced concrete rail bridge with a pedestrian path. Located in Prague, it crosses the Vltava river from Mala Chuchle to the border of Branik and Hodkovice. It was built in the 1950s as part of the Prague Rail Bypass. However, the story behind its second name is a little more nuanced. The Branik Bridge stands as a testament to a turbulent period in Czech history – the era of the communist regime. During the 1948 takeover, many intellectuals, including doctors, teachers, lawyers, and writers found themselves suddenly out of work. The communist government saw them as a threat and forced them to work as laborers. Many of these Prague intellectuals ended up working on the Branik Bridge, effectively building a bridge, not just over the Vltava, but also over the ideological chasm that had separated them from the regime. This is the reason why the bridge is known to many as the Bridge of Intelligence. It serves as a subtle reminder of the intelligence, fortitude, and resilience of the Czechoslovakian people.
