Opened in 1956, Northwood High School has a rich history woven into the fabric of Silver Spring, Maryland. Initially, the school served as a combined junior and senior high school, under the leadership of Principal Edward Bartlett. Can you imagine a brand new school without a working bell system? Northwood’s first students experienced this, relying on whistles to signal class changes. The school even lacked lockers and a cafeteria in those early days. Despite these humble beginnings, Northwood High School quickly became a cornerstone of the community. However, changing demographics led to its closure in 1985, a decision fiercely contested by the community. The “Indians,” Northwood’s original mascot, became a symbol of a bygone era. The school’s trophies were distributed, uniforms sold for a dollar, and even the Indian headdress found a new home in the Wheaton Library. Yet, the story of Northwood High School doesn’t end there. The school reopened its doors in 2004, rising from the ashes like the Gladiator, its new mascot. This rebirth, fueled by increasing population needs, marked a new chapter. The first graduating class, along with the incoming students, chose the Gladiator, symbolizing the school’s resilient spirit. Today, Northwood High School thrives with over 1700 students, a testament to its enduring legacy. Did you know Northwood offers a unique program called MC^2? This partnership with Montgomery College allows students to earn college credit and even an Associate’s degree while still in high school. The school also boasts the award-winning WNHS, a student-run television and radio station broadcasting daily news and covering school events. Northwood High School isn’t just a building. It’s a story of resilience, community, and a commitment to education. It’s a place where students, past and present, have forged memories and shaped their futures.
