Did Karl-Wrba-Hof always look like this? The Karl-Wrba-Hof, a behemoth of a residential complex, dominates the landscape. Its yellowish-beige facades have earned it a rather humorous nickname, the “Mustard Buildings.” Right here, in the heart of Vienna’s 10th district, Favoriten, this “city within a city” houses nearly 3,000 people. The Karl-Wrba-Hof stands as a testament to Vienna’s commitment to social housing. Constructed between 1972 and 1982, it replaced a former allotment garden. The complex sprawls between Sahulkastraße, Neilreichgasse, and Sibeliusstraße, bordered by Vivaldigasse and Kornauthgasse to the east. The Karl-Wrba-Hof represents a unique blend of architectural styles. Eight different architects, led by Rupert Falkner, contributed to the project. This collaboration resulted in a variety of building heights, reaching up to eight stories. Rows of terraced houses break up the massive structure, while numerous low-rise buildings fill the inner courtyards. A network of passageways, alleys, stairs, ramps, and arcades create a labyrinthine feel. This network connects the various sections of the complex. This sometimes makes navigating the Karl-Wrba-Hof feel like exploring a hidden world. Beyond its striking appearance, the Karl-Wrba-Hof boasts an impressive array of amenities. A primary school, two kindergartens, a senior citizens’ club, and various social services are available within the complex. Residents also have easy access to shopping and medical care. Numerous green spaces, including several children’s playgrounds and a large sports area, are scattered throughout the grounds. A parking garage lies beneath one of the green areas. The complex even houses works of art. One such piece is Livia Szadai’s metal sculpture “Monokline Blüte” located near staircase 9. The Karl-Wrba-Hof carries the name of a prominent figure in Viennese politics. Karl Wrba served as the district mayor of Favoriten from 1946 to 1966. The complex was named in his honor on October 18, 1979. It is a lasting tribute to his dedication to the community. The Karl-Wrba-Hof represents more than just housing. It represents a community, a microcosm of Vienna itself.
