Have you ever wondered about a church’s enduring spirit? Right here before us stands Fairfax United Methodist Church a testament to faith and community. Its story isn’t just etched in stone but woven into the fabric of Fairfax.
Fairfax United Methodist Church wasn’t built overnight. Its origins are shrouded in some mystery. We believe it existed as early as 1800. But its exact founding date remains elusive. Legend speaks of early services in a simple log cabin around 1822. Imagine the small congregation gathered there. Sharing their faith in that humble structure.
Later they even shared space with the Payne Baptist Church at Fairfax Station. A unique interfaith cooperation in those early years. Following a war a new church building emerged. By 1879 Duncan Chapel stood proudly. Its records marking the beginning of a new chapter.
Then in 1955 the old frame church became too small. The congregation had grown beyond its capacity. A new larger building was needed. The dedication of the current sanctuary happened on August 5 1956. The membership had already surpassed 1000. The old building was sold to Fairfax County. It briefly served as a Department of Health Education and Welfare facility before being demolished. The road leading from Route 123 to the Massey Building was expanded on its site.
Since 1956 the church’s sanctuary has been extended. At least three additions reflect the continuing growth of the congregation. By 1989 membership soared past 3000. The church staff also grew considerably. Fairfax United Methodist Church’s journey reflects the growth and evolution of its community. It continues to serve its faithful community.
