Tucked away in Dübendorf, just outside Zurich, the Lycée Français de Zurich is more than just a school. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of history, languages, and a forward-thinking embrace of technology. The Lycée Français de Zurich first opened its doors in 1955, thanks to the vision of a group of parents, Abbé Henri Joliat, and the French Consulate in Zurich. Initially housed in a room provided by the Catholic Mission on Hottingerstrasse, the school began with just 14 students and one dedicated teacher, Jeanne Obrecht. The Lycée Français de Zurich’s journey wasn’t always smooth. In 1956, the cantonal authorities attempted to bar Swiss children from attending. The parents, however, fought back, appealing the decision and eventually securing the school’s recognition as a private institution, open to both Swiss and international students. The Lycée Français de Zurich continued to grow, moving from a villa on Rüttistrasse to Gockhausen in 1980. In 1989, it officially became the “Lycée Français de Zurich.” The school’s commitment to bilingualism is evident in its French-German program, officially recognized by the Canton of Zurich. This program immerses students in both languages, fostering a natural fluency and appreciation for both cultures. Beyond French and German, the Lycée Français de Zurich embraces a multilingual environment. English is taught from an early age, with optional Spanish and Latin starting in the 6th grade. The school also serves as an examination center for several language certifications, including the German DSD, English IELTS, and Spanish DELE and SIELE. This commitment to language learning reflects the diverse student body, representing over 39 nationalities. In 2016, the Lycée Français de Zurich took a bold step into the digital age, providing each student with a tablet. This initiative wasn’t just about giving students gadgets. It was about transforming the learning experience, promoting personalized learning, creativity, critical thinking, and digital citizenship. This innovative approach helped maintain educational continuity even during the challenging times of the pandemic lockdowns. Today, the Lycée Français de Zurich stands as a testament to its founders’ vision. It’s a place where academic excellence meets a dynamic, multilingual, and technologically advanced learning environment. The Lycée Français de Zurich is more than a school. It’s a community, a hub of cultural exchange, and a launchpad for future global citizens.
