Drawn to a history of faith let’s explore the Congregação Cristã no Brasil. This church has a unique story. It is rooted in the Pentecostal movement. It began with Italian immigrants in Chicago in 1904. They sought divine guidance. They wanted to follow Christ’s teachings.
In 1910 Louis Francescon brought this movement to Brazil. He and others spread their spiritual message. This led to the establishment of the Congregação Cristã no Brasil. The church grew. People wanted to worship God together. They needed places to gather. This led to the creation of a legally recognized institution. It became known as CCB Congregação Cristã no Brasil.
The Congregação Cristã no Brasil is among the largest evangelical denominations in Brazil. It has over two million members. There are more than 20000 temples across Brazil. This includes locations in all five regions.
The Congregação Cristã no Brasil adopted 12 articles of faith in 1927. These were defined at a convention in Niagara Falls New York. This convention was the Italian Christian Church of North America. These articles guide the church’s doctrine. They are called Points of Doctrine and of the Faith.
Initially the church was mostly Italian. By the 1930s it expanded to include other ethnicities. Since 1950 it has been present throughout Brazil. It also has congregations on every continent.
The Congregação Cristã no Brasil has its administrative headquarters in São Paulo. It holds an annual General Ministerial Assembly. This is also known as General Teaching Meetings. These meetings evaluate the church’s state. They develop strategies. They strengthen unity among ministers. These meetings are not open to regular members. They are only for the council of elders.
The main temple is part of the administrative headquarters in Brás. It is the fourth largest in São Paulo. It covers 19028 square meters.
The church values sacred instrumental music. Hymns are sung in unison. Until 1932 the Congregação Cristã no Brasil did not have an orchestra. Louis Francescon called for a meeting. He wanted to add an orchestra. This was to help the congregation sing. The church offers free music schools for men. It also provides musical rehearsals. The Congregação Cristã no Brasil has the largest liturgical orchestra in the world. It has over 500000 musicians. It also has hundreds of apprentices. All are male. The inclusion of women could greatly increase this number. This decision may be made in the future.
The church’s hymnbook is called Hinos de Louvores e Súplicas a Deus. It contains hymns from the 16th to 21st centuries. They are by Brazilian North American British German Italian and other authors. There are 480 hymns. These include hymns for baptisms the Lord’s Supper funerals and youth meetings. There are also hymns for seeking gifts prayer and opening or closing services. In 2013 the church began using Hymnal number 5 with thirty new hymns. The hymnbook has been translated into 14 languages. This includes Braille. The Congregação Cristã does not produce or authorize recordings of its hymns.
