Overlooking the remnants of a legendary vessel, we find ourselves at Inconstant Point. This point, jutting out into the harbor, takes its name from a ship with a remarkable story. The Inconstant, a majestic full-rigged ship, arrived in Wellington in 1851, not as a proud vessel but as a shipwreck. Deemed beyond repair, the ship found an unlikely savior in John Plimmer, a man who would later be known as the “Father of Wellington”. He purchased the wrecked Inconstant, transforming its sturdy hull into a bustling wharf. This became “Plimmer’s Ark”. Imagine, the Inconstant Point we stand on today once marked the edge of this ship turned wharf. It was a hub of activity, its heart beating with the rhythm of commerce, immigration, and maritime life. Over time, as Wellington’s waterfront expanded, the Inconstant became landlocked, its wooden bones swallowed by the city it helped establish. In the 1990s, during construction, those very bones were unearthed. A tangible reminder of Wellington’s maritime beginnings, now resting beneath our feet here at Inconstant Point.
