Perched high on a hill overlooking Zurich the Alte reformierte Kirche Witikon stands as a testament to time. Its history stretches back to 1270 when it was first mentioned as a chapel dedicated to St Otmar. Imagine the humble beginnings a small chapel nestled amongst the hills. This wasn’t just any chapel though. Legend whispers of a pre-existing Celtic sacred site on this very spot. The Alte reformierte Kirche Witikon has witnessed centuries of change. It was expanded in 1768 creating a larger more spacious preaching area. The church saw further renovations in 1820 1889 and 1901 gaining a new gallery a stunning stained-glass window and a replacement steeple. A comprehensive renovation in 1926 followed by the addition of a sacristy in 1939-1940 truly transformed the building. The interior was refreshed with new seating pews wall panels and a new gallery front. Even the choir underwent a renovation in 1975 a new organ was installed.

The Alte reformierte Kirche Witikon’s unique location isn’t just charming it’s historically significant. The surrounding meadows were wisely protected by a building ban in the 20th century. This historical churchyard couldn’t expand due to building restrictions. So a new cemetery was created on Witikonerstrasse.

Notice the simple elegance of the church’s interior. The flat wooden ceiling offers an understated charm. The baptismal font dates back to 1715 a tangible link to the past. The impressive choir windows designed by Max Billeter in 1939 add a touch of artistry. The west gallery railing completes the interior’s understated beauty.
