Whispers of history echo within the Igreja do Carmo. This church stands as a testament to the changing tides of São Paulo. Let us delve into its intriguing narrative. The Igreja do Carmo, inaugurated in 1934, bears the name of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Its history, however, stretches back much further. The original Igreja do Carmo and its adjacent convent fell victim to São Paulo’s rapid modernization in the 1920s. The government, seeking a grand new palace for the state congress, expropriated the land. Demolition began in 1928, erasing centuries of history. The convent, dating back to the 16th century, vanished. The church, built between 1747 and 1758 and later remodeled by the renowned black architect Tebas, met a similar fate. The Carmelite Order relocated to Rua Martiniano de Carvalho, seemingly ending their presence in the city center. Yet, fate intervened. The 1930 revolution brought Getúlio Vargas to power, closing the congress and halting construction of the new palace. The Igreja do Carmo, partially demolished, received a reprieve. It was restored and continues to serve the faithful today. The new Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Carmo was constructed on Rua Martiniano de Carvalho, incorporating salvaged materials from the old church.
