“A symphony of concrete and glass,” a passerby murmured, gazing up at the Edifício Central. The Edifício Central has always been a beacon of modernity in São Paulo. Completed in 1943, this towering structure stands as a testament to the city’s ambition and architectural prowess. Designed by Francisco Matarazzo Neto, the Edifício Central was originally commissioned by the Companhia Central de Importação e Exportação Concentral S.A., a company owned by Count Eduardo Matarazzo. The building quickly became a symbol of the Matarazzo family’s vast industrial empire. The 22-story edifice, with its sleek concrete frame and expansive glass windows, was a stark departure from the city’s traditional architecture. Edifício Central boasted six elevators, a remarkable feature for the time, which whisked occupants up and down its many floors with unprecedented speed. The construction spanned from 1941 to 1943, a remarkably swift timeline given the building’s scale and complexity. The building covers an impressive 23,700 square meters, standing on a plot of 1,610 square meters. Neto collaborated with architects Ciro Mei, Lucjan Korngold, and Wladimir Alves de Souza, each bringing their unique expertise to the project. The result is a harmonious blend of form and function, a building that is both aesthetically pleasing and remarkably practical. The Edifício Central continues to serve the city, housing various commercial and service businesses within its walls. It has withstood the test of time, its “bom” state of conservation and low level of alteration a testament to its enduring quality. The Edifício Central reminds us of São Paulo’s relentless pursuit of progress, a monument to the city’s ever-evolving skyline.
