Imagine a hidden gem. This is Fågelön. It is an island in Lake Mälaren. Fågelön sits in Ekerö Municipality. It is part of Stockholm County.
Fågelön is northeast of Kungshatt. It lies north of Bredäng. The island is owned by the National Property Board. No regular transport links exist to the mainland. You can only get to Fågelön by private boat.
On Fågelön’s southeast side is Lillängen. This is a settlement. An area runs along the shore east of Lillängen. In the mid-1700s it was used as a meadow. By the late 1800s it was cultivated into fields. But it hasn’t been used that way for a long time.
Since 2014 the entire island has been a nature reserve. This includes Kärsön and Lovön. Surrounding islands and islets are also included. They form part of the Lovön Nature Reserve. Two public waterways pass through the reserve. One waterway goes south of Fågelön. It is route 911 Riddarfjärden-Björköfjärden. The other is route 912 Björnholmen-Lövholmen. It runs east of Lovön-Kärsön. It also goes north of Fågelön.
North of Fågelön you can find Kärsön. Krankholmen and Morgongåvan are nearby too. Also close are Tranholmen Tallholmen and Karin’s Island.
West of Fågelön are Skräddarholmen and Koffsan. Utterholmen is also to the west.
South of Fågelön there are no islands mentioned in our sources.
There is a grilling area on Fågelön. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic. Benches and a fire pit are available. You can even find firewood. This idyllic spot invites visitors to relax. It also allows them to connect with nature.
But remember the rules. They protect the Lovö Nature Reserve. Within the reserve certain activities are forbidden. Do not dig or damage bedrock soil or stone. Do not fell or damage trees or bushes. Damaging vegetation is not allowed. Keep dogs leashed. Do not ride horses off designated trails. Camping is limited to two nights. Mooring boats is also limited to two nights at the same beach. Permanent signs are prohibited. These rules help preserve the island’s natural beauty.
