Can a mountain’s view birth a suburb? Here in Stellenberg, the answer is a resounding yes. Stellenberg, nestled in Bellville, Cape Town, takes its name from the Stellenbosch Mountain, a majestic peak visible from the original farm. Stellenberg’s story begins in 1705. Johannes Blesius, the original owner, named his land Stellenburgh, later simplified to Stellenburg. The “berg,” or mountain, in the name is a direct nod to the Stellenbosch Mountain, a landmark that dominated the horizon. This land remained a farm for centuries, changing hands through various families like the Van der Heijdens, De Kocks, Oliviers, Starkes, Hammans, Marais, Greens, Bosman de Waals and finally, De Villiers. The landscape remained largely unchanged, a tranquil expanse beneath the watchful gaze of the mountain. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century, when the farm was sold to Old Mutual, that the seeds of suburban development were sown. In 1969, Stellenberg as we know it began to take shape. Residential development transformed the former farmland, creating a new community. The demand for housing spilled over from the neighboring Eversdal, making Stellenberg a natural extension of the growing area. Present-day Stellenberg thrives next to the N1 highway, offering convenient access to shopping centers and schools. Stellenberg High School anchors the community, while Eversdal Primary School serves families in the adjacent area. Even a Montessori school, Beehive, found its home here. The streets of Stellenberg whisper tales of the past. Mountain View Road, marking the boundary between Eversdal and Stellenberg, offers stunning vistas of Table Mountain. Tulbagh Street commemorates the 1969 earthquake that shook the region during the suburb’s development. Other streets pay homage to historical figures and events, such as Culemborg Street, named after Jan van Riebeeck’s Dutch hometown. Even the bastions of the Castle of Good Hope are immortalized in street names like Leerdam, Buren, Katzenellenbogen, and Nassau. This once-rural landscape has become a vibrant hub, showcasing the enduring spirit of the Cape. Stellenberg, born from a mountain’s view, is a testament to the ever-evolving story of this captivating region.
