How did a small mission in Rio Claro blossom into the influential Igreja Adventista we see today in São Paulo? Let’s unravel this story of faith and growth. The Igreja Adventista in São Paulo isn’t just a building. It represents a rich history, stretching back to the early 20th century. In 1906, the South American Union divided its territory. São Paulo became a mission field, led by Emilio Hoelzle. He was the editor of the “Arautos da Verdade” magazine. The mission’s headquarters were in Rio Claro. By the end of 1906, the first church was organized with 23 members. In 1908, another congregation formed in São Bernardo and Itararé. Growth continued steadily. By 1918, under the leadership of Pastor Jacob G. Kroeker, the mission boasted 323 members. This number doubled to 750 by 1922. The burgeoning membership led to the establishment of the São Paulo Conference in December 1922, marking a significant step in the church’s development. The church’s journey wasn’t without its growing pains. The São Paulo Conference underwent multiple divisions. This reflects the increasing number of Adventists in the region. In 1977, the conference split into East and West. Further divisions occurred in 1982 and 1991, creating the Paulista Sul, Paulista Leste, and Paulistana conferences. This constant reorganization testifies to the Igreja Adventista’s remarkable expansion. Even as recently as 2014, the Paulistana Conference divided again, giving rise to the Paulista Sudeste Conference. The current headquarters of the Paulistana Conference reside on Avenida Santo Amaro, a testament to the church’s enduring presence in São Paulo. The Igreja Adventista’s story is one of continuous growth and adaptation. It’s a story etched in the hearts of its members and the landscape of São Paulo.
