Peace pervades Ahimsa Sanctuary. This isn’t just a place it’s a testament. A testament to Marie Byles a remarkable woman. She was Australia’s first female solicitor. She was also a passionate conservationist. Ahimsa meaning non-violence in Sanskrit reflects her beliefs. This sanctuary nestled in the bushland near Sydney is her legacy.
Marie purchased the land in 1935. She envisioned a haven. A place where nature and spirituality intertwined. She designed and built a small house herself. It’s made of unpainted fibro oiled timber and rubble. Its terracotta roof blends seamlessly with the landscape. The house is simple yet beautiful. It perfectly embodies her philosophy of understated elegance.
The sanctuary isn’t just a house. It’s also home to the Hut of Happy Omen. This open shed served as a meditation space. Marie opened it to meditation groups. She sought harmony with nature. She embraced Eastern religions. She also advocated for national parks long before they were common. She was instrumental in establishing Bouddi National Park.
Ahimsa’s bushland is stunning. It’s filled with eucalypts angophoras and sandstone ledges. It adjoins Lane Cove National Park. A planned burn years ago led to a flourishing of acacias and grevilleas. A dedicated bushcare group works tirelessly to protect this unique ecosystem. They control invasive weeds. They keep the area pristine. They honor Marie’s vision.
Tragically Marie suffered a brutal attack in 1966. She suffered serious injuries including a fractured skull. Despite this she refused to press charges. Her resilience is inspiring. She continued to live at Ahimsa. She continued her work for conservation. Her spirit is palpable here.
In 1970 she donated Ahimsa to the National Trust of Australia. She remained as Honorary Curator until her death in 1979. Ahimsa remains a peaceful haven.
